hey...
i suggest to go to arenal (la fortuna) first. i bet you anything that you or any of you wants to go to the hot springs there... if you go to montezuma first and then the arenal with a bit of tan... that's going to be painful. some times i drive people around and i see how people get the minimum tan and they pay the entrance to the springs and they don't enjoy it as much or the way they have to... then head to monteverde and then montezuma, for some crazy adventure and enjoy that water fall at montezuma.

ps. when you go to arenal, go through san ramon cuz if you like the canopy... north from san ramon, there is a canopy called san lorenzo. is on the road and up in the mountain to la fortuna

It's six of one and half a dozen of the other. It'll take about 1/2 a day to get to either from San Jose so it's a coin toss. I haven't stayed around Arenal but it's beautiful there but Monteverde was simply wonderful ! My only warning for you there is that some of the places we stayed didn't have hot showers. Past that definitely make time to do a zip-line tour through the cloud forest, it rocks!

80% of prisoners in US jails are there on drug related charges, maffia, terrorists, gangs all depend on the high price of illegal drugs.

They should all be Legalized, and regulated

I guess I won't have to worry about finding them myself- the beach is miles from me.

The war on drugs is a mismanaged failure.

That route sounds very well planned, but I think a better option is to take the ferry from Puntarenas. You go west from San Jose to Puntarenas, catch the ferry which then takes you over the Nicoya Gulf so you can enjoy the ride a bit. Once on the Peninsula there are a few routes, but the nicest would be to wind around the coast to Mal Pais and Playa Coyote. Here is a little map to show you. Playa Coyote is just north of Mal Pais.

Take the main road north to guanacaste, after you pass puntarenas entrance you will be in guanacaste, keep driving for 50 km approximately and when you see a shell gas station on your left, there will be a sign that say nicoya and tempisque river and bridge, make a left and follow the road and the signs to Nicoya, at the end of that road there is a T make a left and follow the road to Carmona town, when you get there follow the road to Coyote point in Spanish "punta Coyote", and from there to Caletas beach I hope that there you will find Casa Caleta.

well ive been to san jose many times and from my experience.....i would say that the hot springs at Volcan Arenal called Tabacon was the best. Theres also a water park in guanacaste thats excelent for the dry season (december-may) then theres SanIsidro thats south from there, that like Tijuana, Mexico. In Limon i think there is a Four Season hotel, and its a beutiful place with coral reef and conopy tours.

The entire nation is within a few hours of San Jose. ;-) You can catch a bus and be anywhere within about 4 hours.

Jaco actually has its own charm, and I went there about 4 times while I was in the country. By US standards, even that beach isn't crowded. For convenience of getting there and back for your flight, you really can't beat it.

Coming back from Nicoya, you might consider swinging through Monteverde. It's a lot more remote, so its harder to get to - definitely ask your concierge for advice - but if you haven't seen it, you must before you leave the country.

If you're not dead set against staying in the city, I would look into spending your last night in the western suburbs of the city. Look into the San Pedro area or Los Yoses - it's an upscale neighborhood with various embassies and the University, and is really a very pretty area. You don't really get the full Costa Rican flavor if you don't spend any time in the cities of the Central Valley. I'd recommend Hotel Le Bergerac - it's where I put my parents up when they came to visit me, and it's just adorable. Beautiful room, courteous staff who speak flawless English.
